Welcome back to Galway Chamber’s Business of the Week series. This week, we spoke to Ruth Hennelly, Hennelly Finance.
My name is Ruth Hennelly. I am a qualified financial advisor and an employee benefits specialist with Hennelly Finance.
Tell us about your business.
Hennelly Finance is among the west of Ireland’s leading financial advisors. We help our clients to plan for their future and achieve their lifestyle goals.
As independent financial brokers we are not tied to any one financial institution. This gives us the flexibility to source financial solutions that best suit our clients’ needs.
With a focus on pension planning, life, income and illness cover, savings and investments, we also offer in-depth knowledge of the Irish health insurance market and specialist expertise in employee benefits programs for corporate organisations.
How did Hennelly Finance get started?
Hennelly Finance was established by my mother Helena in 2000. After being made redundant by Friends First early in the new millennium and faced with no income, three children in university and a few approaches from life companies to work in direct sales, she decided to seize the opportunity to launch her own impartial brokerage. The business was launched on 27 April and first located on Galway’s Abbeygate Street, specialising in home mortgages and family insurance protection.
Why did you choose to locate Hennelly Finance in Galway?
Galway is a vibrant city with a very supportive business community and a real culture of innovation. It is a great fit for a growing and progressive business like Hennelly Finance.
How has being a member of Galway Chamber helped you?
Having the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, attend regular networking events, learn from other industry experts and showcase Hennelly Finance at events such as Business After Hours has given us a strong platform for business development and growth. We have also made many good friends and enjoy being part of the Chamber’s active business community.
What is the biggest challenge facing businesses in 2018?
Regulation and protection of data is without a doubt the most pressing challenge facing businesses with the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May. Understanding and implementing data protection best practice will be a key focus for Hennelly Finance in the coming months.
What one thing do you do every day that makes your business a success?
Our success is down to one simple thing – a consistent approach to the best possible customer service. We are constantly learning, innovating, building relationships and keeping communication lines open, all to help our customers succeed at their goals.
What other business person do you aspire to be like, if any?
My mother Helena is the ideal role model given all she has achieved in business while raising a family and continuing to provide us with the most incredible support. Her ability to achieve work-life balance while steadily growing her business and reputation year-on-year is nothing short of inspirational.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given, with regard to doing business?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Inevitably when you run a business you will face challenges but if you surround yourself with trusted advisors, mentors and industry experts you’ll have access to a support network that can help you meet challenges head-on.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone just getting started in business, what would it be?
Visibility is important to any business, especially one just starting out, so regular networking and relationship building is crucial. It is also important to help people as much as you can. This has always been at the core of our business and in addition to giving us great satisfaction, has helped us form valuable relationships and a reputation for exceptional customer service.
