Welcome back to Galway Chamber’s Business of the Week series. This week, we spoke to Dolores Andrew-Gavin, of Irish Health Hour.
My name is Dolores Andrew-Gavin, I am a proud Galwegian, Mum of two hurling-mad boys and Past President of Junior Chamber Galway. I am the Founder of IrishHealthHour, a Digital Marketing Enthusiast, Author, Empowerment Coach and Storyteller.
How did the idea for your business come about?
IrishHealthHour started as a hashtag hour on Twitter and as a way for me to engage with and find likeminded people on-line. After my legal career came to an end due to the recession in 2008 I found myself as a stay at home mum looking after my young boys. I became interested in natural ways to look after my family’s health and started to train in various energy therapies including Reiki and EFT.
My biggest challenge was not having a community to be a part of and not being able to network in the evening times so, I set up an on-line community instead!!! It has gone from being just a hashtag hour on Twitter to become a global on-line networking & marketing community with health and wellness content submitted from all corners of the globe.
Tell us about Irish Health Hour.
My main aim for IrishHealthHour was to make it interactive and “community driven”, hence the hashtag hour where people can come on and network with others in the health and wellness space. It is for B2B and B2C.
It has now grown into a subscription website where members get to avail of many services to include appearing as guest on the hashtag hour (our guest last Sunday the 13th of January 2019 “trended in Ireland” i.e. was the most talked about conversation in Ireland between 8-9 pm on Sunday evening on Twitter). Members also get to be part of a Facebook community, can submit monthly blog posts and up load details of workshops they are running or advertise their product or service. I also interview people via #irishhealthhourchats (video interview).
I also offer 1:1 and group social media training on Twitter. I also help businesses create a content marketing/digital strategy in alignment with their core beliefs, values and unique story.
My workshop “The Subtle Art of Storytelling” is a unique coaching approach that helps you find your business story, create a picture of your ideal client or customer and then find them on line with focused content.
What are the major changes you have seen in your industry in recent years?
Social media can play a huge part in your overall business and marketing strategy. However, as the use of social media grows it is easy to get lost in the crowd unless you make your content stand out. Bearing this in mind when you use social media in a targeted, focused way you can reach people that want what you sell!! You can also position yourself as an expert in your field.
People buy from people and behind every business there is a person with a story. When you share this story or at the very least have your content coming from this place, that’s when you align with your ideal customers.
How has being a member of Galway Chamber helped you, and Irish Health Hour?
Running an on-line business as a solopreneur can be lonely and since becoming a member of Galway Chamber, I have gained valuable networking opportunities and made valuable connections and have gotten opportunities to be more involved with my local community again.
What inspires you, as a businesswoman?
Seeing people find their voice and being able to tell their story to the world!
What is one thing you do every day that makes Irish Health Hour the success that it is?
I show up consistently.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone just getting started in business what would it be?
Know your WHY! When you are clear on WHY it is you are doing what you are doing this will keep you going on the days you don’t feel motivated to turn up, or when you feel nothing is going right. Each business has its unique journey, it’s up and downs, its curveballs and its jubilations and it’s the challenges we face head on that teach us the most.
AND we know people buy a product because of the way they hope to “feel” when they have it. Maybe you buy a course that promises more confidence, an app that promises to relieve your scheduling stress.. whatever.
When you do the exercise of finding your WHY you do so from your emotional right brained centre. This gives balance to your business story and helps you create content in alignment with your ideal client’s emotional needs.
